What counts as an emergency call?

Not every plumbing fault needs a middle-of-the-night plumber. These do:

  • A burst pipe or a line that's let go under the floor
  • Gas you can smell inside or around the house
  • Sewer rising through a floor drain or a toilet overflowing
  • Stormwater surging into the house during a swell or a downpour
  • A hot water unit that has split or stopped dead with a household needing it

Something not listed can still be urgent. Describe it on the phone and we name honestly which side of the line it falls on.

Burst pipe? Stop the water first

Most of the damage from a burst happens early, before any van arrives. What you do in that window decides how much of the house gets wet.

  1. 01

Turn off the main tap at the water meter

Look near the front boundary; a lid packed with sand may need a firm hand.

  2. 02

Isolate the hot water side if you can

Closing the unit's isolation valve saves the tank draining out through the break.

  3. 03

Keep power away from wet carpet and floors

If water is near power outlets, stay clear of the room and say so when you ring.

Then call. With the water stopped, what was an emergency becomes a repair we can quote and fix properly.

How does an after-hours call run?

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 1093 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Made safe, then fixed

We stop the water or shut off the gas, cap or clear the failed line and get the essential service running again in the same visit.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

How an urgent job is priced

"I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe." Joan

Emergency work is no different, and four things shape the figure:

  • The hour Nights and weekends run at the after-hours rate, named to you before anyone heads out.
  • The pipe Splicing a rusted galvanised supply line is a different repair from patching a split earthenware drain.
  • The access A burst under a low cottage floor means crawling in with a torch; one at an outside tap is quick.
  • The parts What the fix needs on the spot, versus what's ordered in for the proper repair.

Why small faults turn urgent here. The peninsula sits low, with surf along its eastern edge and the river at its back. When a big swell tops the dune line, ocean water has run down the streets toward Fullerton Street and flooded the stormwater grid. The low north end near the beach cops inundation first whenever a storm breaks through, and any pipe or pit in that path fills with sand and salt water at once.

The pipes themselves fail suddenly, too. Weatherboard and fibro houses from the original township grid still carry galvanised supply pipe and earthenware drains in places, and neither fades quietly: the galvanised rusts thin until it splits, the earthenware cracks under a shifting sandy base. A cottage can go from dry floor to ankle-deep in the time it takes to find a torch, which is why we treat these callouts as urgent from the first word on the phone.

When we're not the right call

Gas escaping at the meter or beyond it is the network's to fix, and their 24-hour fault line is the first number we give you. A break in the main beyond your boundary is Hunter Water's repair, and we pass on their contact details when you ring. Ring us either way and you'll know who fixes it before a van leaves.

Urgent Plumbing Questions

Do you come out in the middle of the night?

Yes. A 2am burst is booked exactly like a weekday job, because the phone line never closes. After dark and on weekends an after-hours rate applies, and we name it before a van moves.

Seawater is coming down my street in a storm. Is that a plumbing call?

Get everyone clear of the water first, because surge flooding on these low streets can hide debris and live hazards. Once people are safe, ring us about water entering your home or drains spilling back, and we name what's yours to fix and what isn't.

My hot water unit died on a Sunday. Is that urgent?

It can be, especially in an older cottage where a salt-rusted unit has quit without any warning. A dead unit can be booked at any hour, and when the new unit must be ordered in, a loan tank covers showers until it's fitted.

What can I safely turn off before you arrive?

The main tap at the water meter stops a burst line flooding the house, and the isolation valve on a hot water unit shuts that side down separately. If you can't pick which tap is which, describe what's in front of you and we'll point out the right one while you're standing there.
