Plumber working on a gas oven connection

Stockton Gas Fitting Services

The gas work splits into two specialist pages.

Gas Appliance Installation

Hooking up a new cooktop, oven, outdoor barbecue or pool heater, then pressure testing and certifying the connection: see installing gas appliances.

Gas Leak Detection

A smell indoors or around the meter, traced with gas detectors and fixed on the house side: see finding and fixing gas leaks.

Gas hot water work, including continuous-flow and storage units, sits with our hot water team. Fuel and water are different jobs with different gear, so a gas problem never gets mixed up with a water leak.

How Do You Know a Gas Line's Failing?

Four signs say a gas line or appliance needs a fitter:

  • A rotten-egg smell indoors, under the floor or by the meter, pointing to gas escaping from the line.
  • Burner flames with yellow tips instead of a clean blue, a sign the appliance is burning dirty.
  • An appliance that cuts out, lights slowly or runs weak, which can trace back to the supply or the regulator.
  • A hiss near a bottle or the meter, or soapy water bubbling at a joint: stop and call.

A smell outranks everything else on that list. Leave the house, ring the gas network's emergency line, then call us for the repair on the house side.

The Gas Job, Step by Step

Licensed gas fitters run every job the same way, and the method doesn't change for a cottage or a commercial kitchen.

  1. 1

    Isolate and inspect

We shut the supply at the meter or bottle and check the line and appliance with gas detectors before anything is touched.

  2. 2

    Find and quote

Once the fault or the install is scoped, you see a fixed figure and choose.

  3. 3

    Do the work

The repair, new line or connection is done with the right fittings for the position, including corrosion-resistant gear where the line runs outside.

  4. 4

    Test and certify

The line is pressure tested, the appliance is checked burning clean, and you get the paperwork a gas job legally needs.

What Drives the Price of a Gas Job?

Three things move the figure, and you hear all of them before you approve anything.

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours).

  • Access A gas pipe under a low cottage floor takes more crawling to reach than one running along an outside wall.
  • Pipe and fittings New copper or composite line costs more than a simple connection swap, and outdoor runs in salt air need fittings that won't corrode through in a few years.
  • The appliance Hooking a cooktop onto a bayonet that is already there takes far less than piping gas across the yard to a pool heater.

Salt Wind and the Old Grid

Gas lines here age faster than they would inland

Onshore wind brings salt off the ocean and the river onto every outdoor regulator, bayonet and joint, so a fitting that would last for years inland can start weeping far sooner on a verandah or a rear wall facing the beach.

The old housing adds its own problems

Some pre-1940 timber and fibro homes on the 1880s grid still have old gas pipe in the walls, and a renovation that adds a gas cooktop or a continuous-flow unit can mean upgrading the supply line as well, because the old pipe won't carry the load. We quote both parts of that job together so nothing is a surprise.

Commercial kitchens get the same care

A cafe cooktop with a weak flame or a failing regulator mid-service costs trade, and business gas work sits with commercial plumbing.

When we're not the right call: gas escaping at the meter or from the street main is handled by the network operator, so their fault line comes first. An oven whose ignition has lost power is an electrician's repair; we reconnect the gas once the wiring is sorted.

Gas Questions From Peninsula Callers

Do I need a licensed gas fitter to connect a new BBQ?

Yes. A barbecue hook-up or a new bayonet is gas work, so a licensed gas fitter has to do it and pressure test it before the barbecue is lit. You approve the price before anything is connected.

What should I do if I can smell gas at my Stockton home?

Leave the house with everyone in it, leave the switches alone, and phone the network's emergency number. When they have made the supply safe, we trace the leak on the house side, repair it, retest the line and hand over the compliance paperwork.

Can you convert my old Stockton cottage from electric to gas cooking?

Yes, where a gas main runs near the property. We check the supply, run the new line and connect the cooktop, then test everything. Some pre-1940 cottages on the old grid need pipe upgrades first, and the quote covers that before work starts.

Does salt air affect the gas fittings on my outdoor heater?

It does. Salt carried on the wind eats at outdoor regulators, bayonets and hose connections faster than it would inland. An annual check catches the corrosion before it becomes a leak.
